I'm not sure I understand. I can't think of any ads I've seen that make you sympathize with the incompetent opponent. Could you elaborate?

It was more about not appearing to be the elite... You want to be the underdog, not the intellectual or similar. Both sides want you to feel they're like you and the other is aloof or out of touch.
